2016 Tennessee Iris Festival in Dresden

It’s the 37th Annual Tennessee Iris Festival in Dresden!  Saturday, April 30 through Saturday, May 7, 2016, will be packed with fun festival events for the entire family in celebration of the iris and our local Dresden Community. 

Saturday, April 30, 2016

Tennessee Iris Festival Art Tour

View tasteful photographs, drawings, and paintings displayed throughout Dresden area businesses in our first ever Dresden Art Tour. Entries into the art show come from Weakley, Obion, Gibson, Carroll, and Henry County in the age divisions of 17 & under and 18 & older. The art will be displayed during the entire week of the 37th Annual Tennessee Iris Festival and can be viewed during regular operating hours of the participating businesses. Maps of the participating businesses are available at Dresden City Hall, Weakley County Chamber of Commerce, and many of our businesses around town.

Citywide Yard Sale

Spend your day exploring hidden treasures and great bargains across the city of Dresden. Bring your friends and enjoy being out and about town when it’s Iris Time in Tennessee! Your $5.00 participation fee may be paid at Dresden City Hall. Checks may be written to Tennessee Iris Festival. The deadline to register is April 22, 2016. Maps are available at Dresden City Hall Wednesday, April 27, 2016.

Bicycle Rodeo

Bring your bicycle and enjoy riding in a fun-filled obstacle course in the Ned Ray McWherter Civic Center parking lot beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Power Wheels in the Park

Bring your battery powered toy for a fun drag racing and obstacle course experience. Participants may be ages 7 and under. Event will take place in City of Dresden Park at 5:00 p.m. and two Power Wheels will be given away! For more information contact the chairpersons.

Arts & Crafts Marketplace

Visit arts, crafts, and fine merchandise vendors and shop for souvenirs and gifts at the marketplace at Dresden City Park from 4:00 p.m. to dark. To be a vendor, visit http://www.tennesseeirisfestival.net and fill out an application. The cost of a booth is $25. Tables will be available for your 10’ x 10’ booth space. Set up will begin at 2:00 p.m.

Tennessee Iris Festival Opening Ceremony

Join us at Dresden City Park at 6:00 p.m. as the 37th celebration begins! This fun night of entertainment features live music from the local band “Avonlea”, free food, and a fantastic fireworks show sponsored by Savant Learning Systems! The “UC Balloon Guy” will also be joining us to make your favorite balloon animals! This is an event your whole family is sure to enjoy! Bring your lawn chair.

Cemetery Walk

This event is a favorite of many and sure to be enjoyable to people of all ages. This year the Cemetery Walk will honor Funeral Directors, with special emphasis on Bowlin Funeral Home that recently celebrated 100 years in business. The actors will introduce the visitors to the many morticians and funeral directors from our community buried at Sunset. The guides will discuss with their groups the customs and traditions of funerals in rural West Tennessee over the years. Historical pictures and memorabilia will be on display. Don’t miss this enjoyable after-noon of oral, interpretive history. Transportation will be available to those in need of assistance in traveling the course of the cemetery. Sponsors and first tour will begin at 4:30 p.m. Last tour begins at 6:30 p.m.

Prayer Breakfast

Begin the week at 7:00 a.m. in fellowship at the Dresden First Baptist Family Life Center. A breakfast and program will be provided by Dresden First Baptist Church. Dignitaries, city, county, and state officials will be recognized. Tickets cost $5.00 each and may be purchased at the door immediately before the event. Tickets are available for purchase in advance at Dresden First Baptist Church, First United Methodist Church, Dresden City Hall and Simmons Bank in Dresden.

Tasting Party

Come enjoy the fine cooking and popular dishes of the area’s best cooks at The Dresden Elks Lodge from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. In addition to the tasting party we will also be introducing our new cookbook “The Iris: Vintage Edition” for the first time! Come out and get a cookbook before they are sold! Quantity is limited! Admission is $7.00 at the door.

Children’s Fun Bingo

Bring your children up to 12 years old to Dresden Elementary School from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. for a free game of Bingo. Fun prizes will be awarded! Please stay with your children while they play or make plans to pick them up at DES no later than 7:00 p.m.

Iris Festival Fun Bingo

This is one of the most popular events of the week and offers many opportunities to win. The game itself is suspenseful and exciting, and the fun is topped by the great prizes you may win. Bingo is the place to be! Come to the new location Dresden Middle School Gym from 7:00 – 8:30 p.m. to get in on the action. Admission is free. Must be 18 to enter.

Think you’re a good cook? Enter your prize-winning recipe, and let the judges decide. There is no cost to enter. Bring your baked dishes to the McWherter Civic Center between 8:00 and 10:00 a.m. The judging will begin at 10:00 a.m.

Senior Citizen Luncheon

Bring a dish, enjoy a free potluck meal, and enjoy the fellowship at 12:00 noon at the McWherter Civic Center. Door prizes will also be given.

Quilt Show

Pancake Supper

Come eat delicious pancakes at Dresden First Baptist Family Life Center served by the Men’s Ministry and Women on Mission before the community-wide church service from 5:00—6:45 p.m. Tickets will be $6.00 for adults, $4.00 for children 3-6 years old, and free for children 2 years old and younger. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance. All proceeds will be given to Santa’s Helpers. Please contact chairpersons to purchase advance tickets.

Community Wide Gospel Singing

Enjoy community fellowship at Dresden First Baptist Church at 7:00 p.m. The featured group is the Renaissance Quartet from Bethel University under the direction of Matthew Holt. This group has encouraged and uplifted listeners with their unique style since the conception of the group in 2006. The group has traveled from coast to coast leading worship and performing in concerts of all kinds. The Quartet won best new group at the 2009 National Quartet Convention in Louisville, Kentucky, besting 41 other groups in the competition. They opened the final evening show in 2009 at the Convention before an audience of 23,000 peo-ple. If you enjoyed last year’s Iris Festival Singing, you will remember that Renaissance per-formed to rave reviews and scores of standing ovations. An added treat is the accompaniment and direction of Matthew Holt, acclaimed pianist for the Gaither Vocal Band, who will favor our festival with at least one solo during the evening. Don’t miss this worship service and blessed evening of wonderful music.

American Dreams Amusements Carnival
The carnival will be set up at the old McCauley’s Chevrolet Parking Lot, between Fred’s and Southern Car Sale and Rentals. Opening night will be Saturday, April 30, 2016. The carnival will run through Saturday, May 7, 2016. As always, the carnival promises fun rides and delicious concessions. Dresden Elementary, Middle School and High School students will be visiting the carnival during the Festival week.

Community Health Fair

Come to the West Side of Court Square in Dresden from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon as local health care providers give free health screenings and resource education.

Iris Festival Golf Tournament
Chairperson: Dresden Rotary Club, Colin Johnson, 514-0858
Gather your golf buddies and make this 3-man scramble part of your Iris Festival celebration. Lunch will be served at 11:30 a.m. and tee off will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Persimmon Hills Golf Course. Advance registration is required. The cost to play is $150 per team. Forms are available at Simmons Bank in Dresden, BancorpSouth, Dresden City Hall or from any Dresden Rotary member. Cash prizes will be awarded and lunch will be provided free of cost.

Fairy Tale Feast

Bring your children to visit with their favorite fairytale characters at Dresden Elementary School cafeteria from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. Admission to this event is free, and refreshments will be provided.

Fashion Show

Come to the Purple Iris located at the Dresden Court Square and check out the latest fashions from Northwest Tennessee! The show will begin at 7:00 p.m. This year, we will be featuring stores from Dresden and several surrounding towns. Wear your latest knock-out outfit, sit back, relax, and enjoy our show! Tickets can be purchased in advance from Urban Designs; advance tickets are $8.00. Tickets will be sold at the door for $10.00. Free admission for children 5 years or younger.

Quilt Show

Whether you enjoy quilting as a hobby, a trade, or simply enjoy viewing the pieces other people have made, you should make a point to come by the McWherter Civic Center be-tween 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Advanced registration for entry is required. To register, please take your quilts to the McWherter Civic Center on Wednesday, May 4, 2016 between 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. for qualified entry.

Tennessee Iris Festival Iris and Horticulture Show

Bring your favorite plants, flowers, and mixed arrangements to Dresden First United Methodist Church. Entries will be taken from 7:30 – 9:30 a.m., and judging will begin at 9:45 a.m. This event is open to public viewing from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. There will also be a new “Best of Show Iris” award given this year!! Entries and awards must be picked up by 4:00 p.m.

Corner Café

Tennessee Iris Festival BBQ Cook Off

5K Race, 2 Mile Walk, 1 Mile Kids Fun Run, & .25 Tot Run

The races will be held right off the Dresden Court Square at the corner of Main Street and Poplar Street in Dresden. The first 75 entries, 5K only, will receive a grab bag. 5K Race is $15.00 in advance (deadline April 14th) or $20.00 on the day of the race beginning at 8:00 a.m., 2 mile walk $10.00 beginning at 8:00 a.m., 1 Mile Fun Run, for kids ages 5—12 years will be $10.00 beginning at 7:30 a.m., and 5 and under Tot Run $8.00 im-mediately following the 5K. Tennessee Iris Festival Parade

Find your favorite spot along the NEW parade route to see this year’s entries and our wonderful dignitaries, royalties, and honored guests as they parade through Dresden in celebration of the 37th Annual Tennessee Iris Festival. The parade begins at 10:00 a.m. You can find a highlighted map of the NEW parade route in this booklet. Advance registra-tion for entry is required by Friday, May 6, 2016. Entries forms available at Simmons Bank, Dresden and at tennesseeirisfestival.net.

Parade Yard Party Competition
The Tennessee Iris Festival Executive Board invites the homes and businesses along the Parade route to make the Parade even more festive by hosting a “Yard Party” during the Parade. If you do not live along the Parade route and want to host a party combine your hosting skills with someone who does for a morning of cele-brating this year’s theme, “The Vintage Iris”. The Mayor’s Choice Award for the best “Parade Yard Party” will be awarded a sign to display in the winning yard and a Fes-tive Gift Basket. For more information please call 514-8727 or 514-1605.

Governor’s Luncheon

Gather at the Farmer’s Market Pavilion at the Terry Oliver Plaza to close the festival week and to recognize and thank those who served to make it a success. The program and meal will begin at 12:00 noon. In the event of rain, the event will be moved to Dresden Elemen-tary School. The Iris Festival Luncheon is open to the public. Purchase of tickets is required in advance, and the cost is $10.00 each. Tickets are available at Dresden City Hall and Sim-mons Bank in Dresden.

Pet Show

Bring your pets to A to Z Vet Supply, 9876 Highway 22, Dresden at 2:00 p.m. and show off their beauty and talent in a variety of categories. There will be several cat-egories for all of your pets! No entry fee is required.

Black and Blue Alumni Football Game

“The Black and Blue Bowl is back! The 2nd annual fundraising event between the Dresden High School alumni and the Westview High School alumni promises to be another battle to the finish. Come out and support your community and catch some hard hitting football action! Last year’s event raised over $8,000 between the two programs and this year looks to be an even bigger suc-cess. Tickets are $10 with $5 of every pre-sold ticket going the program in which they are pur-chased from. Pre-sale tickets are available from any alumni football player, Dresden High School, Chad’s Smokehouse, Urban Designs, First Choice Rentals and Simmons Bank. T-shirts and concessions will also be available. *NOTICE: NO MONEY IS KEPT FROM TICKET SALES AT THE GATE. PLEASE, PURCHASE PRE-SALE TICKETS”

The Tennessee Iris Festival Scholarship Fund

A member of the Iris Festival Executive Board will be at each event during the 36th Annual Tennessee Iris Festival with a flower pot intended for the collection of donations to the Tennessee Iris Festival Scholarship Fund established in 2012.  Your donations will be greatly appreciated and will benefit the recipients of the Tennessee Iris Festival Scholarship.  This scholarship will be awarded to two Dresden High School students who have volunteered service to the Tennessee Iris Festival in honor of this year’s Tennessee Iris Festival Grand Marshals and Citizen of the Year.
